Marguerite married the son of a general. In time, the couple divorced. She became the lover of French general and politician Georges Ernest Jean-Marie Boulanger, and died in his arms in July 1891. A scant 2.5 months later, the disconsolate man committed suicide at her gravesite, where he then was buried at his request. His first name and the poignant question, "Ai-je bien pu vivre deluxe mois et demi sans toi?" (Did I really live two and a half months without you?) were added to what became their shared marker.
