George "Fritz" Bertz, 75 years, of Temperance, MI, died Friday, January 3, 2003, in his home. An artist, he was a painter all his life. For over 20 years he operated Kramer Incorporated. The son of Friedrich and Emma (Brabandt) Bertz, he was born November 11, 1927, in Deshler, OH. He married Frances Theresia Bong, November 12, 1983, in Temperance, MI. Fritz was very active in the German American Community in Toledo all his life. He was chairman of the Grounds for the 1st German American Festival in Toledo. Fritz worked as an assistant chairman for the festival for 37 years and was co-chairman and chairman of painting for the festival. He was manager and coach for the Bavarian Sports Club for over 10 years and initiated the 1st Junior Soccer Team. He played soccer on the All Star Team going for the National Cup playing for the American Turners in Filderstadt, Germany. Fritz was a member of the German American Festival, German American Festival Senior Citizens, Bavarian Sports Club, Toledo Schwaben, Teutonia Manner Chor, G.B.U. and local #7 Painters Union.
Fritz is survived by his loving wife, Frances; children, Friedrich Dieter (Lynda) Bertz of Chicago, IL, Richard Robert (Vicky) Bertz of North Pole, Alaska, David Charles (Stella) Bertz of Genoa, OH, Christine Susan (Craig) Cole of Toledo, John Martin (Kathleen) Horvat of Northwood, OH, Marita (John) Welker of Toledo, Rosemarie (Edward) Palmer of Toledo; brothers, Herbert Bertz of Toledo, Richard Bertz of Napoleon, OH, Walter Bertz of Resita, CA; sister, Barbara Turner of Apple Valley, CA; 19 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.
