American merchant who operated from St Petersburg, Russia, for about 30 years. He traded in sugar and dyestuffs and was one of the most successful merchants of the period in St Petersburg. He domiciled in England and never returned to America. His only son (also named John Delaware Lewis) remained in England and became the member of parliament for Devonport from 1868 to 1874. He was only 13 when his father died so was unable to take over the business in Russia, which passed to Lewis Sr's chief clerk and friend, Abraham van Sassen.
