President of Seychelles. He served as the 2nd President of Seychelles from June 5, 1977 to July 14, 2004. He attended both St. Mary's College (Southampton) and King's College London in England before going to work as a lawyer in his native land. As a result of his disappointment with British colonialism, he formed the Seychelles People's United Party in 1964 and two years later, was elected to Seychelles' legislative council. He continued serving in government even after Seychelles became a self-governing colony in 1975. In 1976, he became the first prime minister of Seychelles, serving under President James Mancham. A year later, he became president after a coup d'etat ousted President Mancham. He went on to serve as president for over twenty years before stepping down in 2004. His rule, which was under one party, was seen as a "mixed bag" for his native Seychelles as it saw both social reform and political oppression. In February of 2004, he was succeeded by his vice president James Michel. He continued to be involved with his political party until his passing.
