Irene Hedlin by John Mogren
Irene Elizabeth was born January 31, 1913 on her parent’s farm in Roosevelt Township, Renville County, ND. She was the sixth of ten children born to William Barnum and Louise Elizabeth (Wanner) Siebert. The family attended church in the town of Greene and that is where Irene attended grade school. She graduated from the Tolley High School in 1931. Shortly after graduation she moved to Minot, ND. About 1938 she moved to Spokane, WA where she was employed as a nanny and housekeeper for a while. She then took a position as a cashier.
Irene married Arthur Carl Hedlin on March 8, 1942 at Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. His father retired from farming in 1943 and in 1944 they moved to Bowbells. Art and Irene returned to North Dakota to live on his father’s homestead and they farmed Albin’s land as well as other acreage in Roseland Township over the years. Art and Irene were blessed with three children, Glenn, Mavis and David.
The family was active in the Elmdale Lutheran Church and other community affairs. Irene was an active member at the church and in the activities of the women. She always had a cheerful smile, a loving heart and willing hands. Art and Irene retired from farming in 1978 and moved into Kenmare in 1979. Even after moving into Kenmare they would faithfully attend Sunday worship services and other activities at the Lutheran Church in Niobe.
A highlight of their married life was celebrating their 50th Wedding Anniversary on August 2, 1992 at the Kenmare Senior Center.
Art passed away at Kenmare on May 11, 1994. Irene remained in their home until 2000 when she moved into the Kenmare Baptist Home.
Irene passed away on Tuesday, May 29, 2007 at the Kenmare Hospital. Her funeral was held in the Elmdale Lutheran Church on June 2nd and burial was in the Elmdale Swedish Lutheran Cemetery by her husband.
