Biography of Arthur Hedlin by John Mogren
Carl Arthur Hedlin was born May 9, 1906 on his parent’s farm in Roseland Township, Burke County, ND. He was the second of three born to Albin Karl Hedlin and his wife Jennie Charlotte (Peterson). Carl Arthur was baptized the same year but the Elmdale Lutheran church books reflect only the year. His mother died shortly before his 4th birthday in 1910. Albin employed housekeepers to tend the house and care for the children. He sent for his sister Beda Sweden and she arrived in July 1911. She cared for the children and tended the house until 1914 when Albin married Esther Swanson and they gave Art a half brother and half sister. Art made his affirmation of faith after completing his confirmation studies on June 19, 1921 at the Elmdale Lutheran Church. Arthur attended the Beck (country) school which was near their farm home through the eighth grade.
In the early 1930’s he went to Spokane, Washington where he found employment doing roof work. Later he worked briefly at the airbase in Walla Walla, Washington.
Art married Irene Seibert on March 8, 1942 at Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. His father retired from farming in 1943 and in 1944 they moved to Bowbells. Art and Irene returned to North Dakota to live on his father’s homestead and they farmed Albin’s land as well as other acreage in Roseland Township over the years. Art and Irene were blessed with three children, Glenn, Mavis and David.
The family was active in the Elmdale Lutheran Church and other community affairs. Art served on the church council, township board, Beck School District Board, the Burke County Welfare Board, the Kenmare Community Hospital Board, and the Niobe Elevator Board.
Art and Irene retired from farming in 1978 and moved into Kenmare in 1979. He lived here until his death on May 11, 1994. His funeral was held in the Elmdale Lutheran Church on May 14, 1994 and burial was in the Elmdale Swedish Lutheran Cemetery.
