Hans Amend of Southampton passed away Thursday, April 11, 2019 at Southampton Estates. He was 89. Born in Munich, Germany, Hans worked as a bricklayer following World War II as many of the buildings across Europe were bombed and destroyed. He was most proud of being part of the construction crew who worked on restoring the famous Frauenkirche cathedral in Central Munich. His hard work over several years was an experience that served as his apprenticeship in a building trade, but also helped him reach his goal of earning the money needed to attend the Technische Hochschule München (Munich Technical University), where he received his Diplom Ingenieuer (Dipl. Ing.,) Architektur (Master of Architecture).

After arriving here from Germany, Hans began his career working for Vincent Kling A.I.A., the largest architectural practice in the Philadelphia region back in the 1960s and 1970s. He later established his own architecture practice with an office located in Rockledge, and designed/built two of his family’s homes in Huntingdon Valley. Hans retired in 1994 after several years working as a Regional Construction Manager for Pizza Hut (at that time, a division of PepsiCo).

Hans emigrated to the United States in 1955 at the young age of 26 and settled down in the Philadelphia area. He was extremely proud of his United States citizenship. He enjoyed involvement in several local German-American Associations as well as the 55 Plus Club at his local Catholic Church, through which he met many dear lifelong friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Michael and Franziska Amend, and his brother, Friedrich, of Munich, Germany. His wife Trudy also preceded him in death on April 10, 1995).

Hans is survived by his sister, Hildegard of Munich, Germany, as well as several other relatives and friends in Bavaria. He is also survived by daughter, Debra Weckenman (Frank) of Richboro, their sons, Mike (Nicole) and A.J (Kelly), and their daughter, Jessica McGuffin (Sean); daughter, Carole Amend of Mill Valley, Calif., and her son, Ian Ivins; son, Steven Amend of Morrisville and Pocono Pines; daughter, Julie Huber of Woodbridge, Va., and her children, Zachary, Jessica, Briana and Madison. He will also be greatly missed by his great-grandchildren, Riley and Carson Weckenman, and Carter McGuffin. His beloved dog, Buddy, provided countless hours of contentment and joy for him and fellow residents residing in Sunshine Gardens at Southampton Estates.

Family and friends are invited to attend his funeral services on Friday, April 19, at Kirk & Nice Funeral Home, 333 County Line Rd., Feasterville, PA 19053, where the visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m., with the service starting at 11 a.m. Entombment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park.
