WELL KNOWN SAN PIERRE CITIZEN DIES
John Dolezal, Sr., Bank President, Succumbs to Long Ailment.

SAN PIERRE, Ind., March 8.--John Dolezal, Sr., president of the Bank of San Pierre since its organization in 1916 and head of the firm of John Dolezal & Sons for the past thirty-five years at which time he bought out the interests of Joseph Dolezal and John Dolezal, now of North Judson, passed away at his home here last Thursday afternoon at 3 o'clock at the age of 79 years.
His death followed an illness of two years standing during which period he underwent an operation at the Holy Family hospital at LaPorte and a period of treatments at the same hospital a year later.
For the past three weeks he became critically ill, suffering intense pains from a cancer of the bladder. He was under the care of Dr. W. J. Solt who understanding his case, thoroughly served him faithfully until his end.
Coming to this country at the age of fifteen with his mother from Bohemia, he possessed no other assets than the clothes he wore, an apprenticeship with a tailor in Bohemia and the courage and the will to do, a characteristic of the foreigner coming to this country to seek a livelihood.
He settled in Chicago on his arrival in this country and due to his training as a tailor found ready employment. At the age of 21 he owned his own little tailorshop in Chicago which grew into a sizeable business when he entered a partnership with his cousin, Phillip Taraba.
In 1900 at the advice of his physician who warned him that he was contradicting tuberculosis, he moved to San Pierre, settling on the farm now occupied by Joseph Cesal.
Soon after he purchased an interest in the store which now bears his name, later buying out the interests of his two partners, Joseph Dolezal and John Dolezal, now both of North Judson.
He led a colorful life as a business man of this town his entire life, having served in the capacity of the town's tailor, undertaker, grocer and banker, taking great pride in all his work and doing it to the best of his ability.
He was a leader in all civic affairs and always carried the interests of his town and community and of its people at heart.
Although he lived past his allotted time of life and might have justly claimed to have done his part, life was sweet, he enjoyed it and it burdened his heart when he found that the time had come when he could no longer put forth his efforts to repay it.
Surviving him are his widow, four sons, four daughters and a stepdaughter, as follows, Henry of Cicero, Robert of Carroll, Iowa, Otto and John of San Pierre, Mrs. Joseph Cesal, Mrs. Rose Koehler, Mrs. Henry Stalbaum of San Pierre, Helen of Chicago, and Mrs. Chas. Tannehill of San Pierre.
He was buried from his home on Sunday afternoon with funeral services in charge of the I. O. O. F. Praha Lodge No. 231 of Chicago, and the North Judson Blue Lodge, Masonic order. Fr. Louis Bozik preceded the rites with prayer and a funeral sermon, Marion Salathe of North Judson rendering two fitting vocal members. Interment was made in the San Pierre cemetery.

Obituary published in the Vidette-Messenger of Porter County (Valparaiso, IN), on Tuesday, March 8, 1938, pg. 5.
