Janna Ohden, age 96, of Wall Lake, Iowa, formerly of Lake View, Iowa, passed away at Trinity Regional Medical Center in Fort Dodge, Iowa, on Monday, October 25, 2004. Janna Gerdes was born on July 20, 1908, Breda, Iowa, the daughter of Bert J. and Anna (Freese) Gerdes. She was baptized at Wheatland Presbyterian Church, rural Breda, as an infant. Janna attended Sac County country school, graduating from the eighth grade in 1923.

Janna was united in marriage to Carl W. Frank in Carnarvon, IA, on March 27, 1929. To this marriage was born two sons: Calvin and Robert. Carl and Janna farmed near Carnarvon until Carl's death from a car accident on December 21, 1957.

On October 26, 1961, Janna was united in marriage to Ranke G. Ohden in Yankton, SD. With this marriage Janna gained two sons, Larry and Norman. They lived in Storm Lake, Iowa, before moving to Lake View where they worked together doing house painting and wall papering for many years. They retired in 1980 when Janna was 72. She wintered in Texas for 33 years, with the past several years staying in Iowa as the trip had become too much for her. Ranke passed away October 10, 1994.

Janna had a very fulfilling life as a mother and homemaker. She often expressed that her greatest joy in life was her role as a loving grandmother and great-great-grandmother. The love and admiration her grandchildren had for her was a sign of how wonderful a person she was. Her strong faith and desire to live life to the fullest kept her going through many tough times. She enjoyed knitting, crafts, cooking, baking, and writing personal letters to friends and relatives, as she was able. She was also a very competitive card player.

Survivors include sons: Larry Ohden of Laurens, IA; and Norman Ohden of Boerne, Texas; a daughter-in-law, Margery Frank of Carroll, IA; 12 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; seven great-great grandchildren; and many extended family members.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands: Carl W. Frank in 1957, and Ranke G. Ohden in 1994; her sons: Robert Lee Frank in 1988 and Calvin W. Frank in 2000; grandson Keith; great-great granddaughter Kirsten Ann; six brothers: Gerd, Ralph, Paul, Ben, John, and Harvey Gerdes; and four sisters: Tollie, Pauline, Ida, and Hilda.
