Dr. John B. Sutherland, 95, of Topeka, KS, died peacefully on Sunday, July 21, 2013, at home surrounded by his family.
He was born in Burlingame, KS on February 21, 1918, the son of Earl W. Sutherland, Sr. and Edith Mae Hartshorn Sutherland.
He was a lifetime member of the Federated Church of Burlingame.
John married his high school sweetheart, [name removed], also of Burlingame, on October 13, 1935. They lived and loved together for more than 77 years.

John was the youngest of six children and was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters, Helen (Seltzer), Ruth (Herlan), Marie (Farrar) and two brothers, Eugene and Earl.
Earl was the recipient of the Nobel Prize for Medicine & Physiology in 1971 for the discovery of Cyclic AMP.
John graduated from Burlingame High School in 1935; attended Washburn University 1935-1936, received his BS and MS degrees in Chemical Engineering from Kansas State University 1936-1940; received his PhD in Chemical Engineering from the University of Pittsburgh, PA in 1946.
While earning his degrees, John was a refinery engineer for Texaco in Port Arthur, TX; research assistant, at the Mellon Institute of Industrial Research, Pittsburgh, PA; and assistant professor of Chemical Engineering, Northwestern University, Evanston, IL.
He was Founder and President of Sutherland-Becker Laboratories, Inc; Executive Director of the Kansas Industrial Development Commission; Research and Planning Director for Butler Mfg; Associate Dean of Engineering, Kansas State University; University-wide Director of Industrial Research and Extension & Director of Office of Industrial Development Studies, University of Missouri.
In 1980 Dr Sutherland retired as Professor Emeritus of Chemical Engineering, University of Missouri.
John was an avid fisherman who loved teaching his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren the art of "hooking the big ones" at the farm pond, the Northern Great Lakes, Canada, the Gulf of Mexico, the Bay of Banderas, the Florida Keys and the Atlantic Ocean.
Always the educator, he encouraged young people to be curious about the world around them, ask questions, and never stop learning.
He gave love to his family and friends, hope and opportunities to those who needed them, and always supported his country and community.
Professional memberships and recognitions include American Institute of Chemical Engineers, American Chemical Society, National Society of Professional Engineers, Sigma Xi (Science), Phi Kappa Phi (Scholastic), Who's Who in Engineering, American Men of Science.
John will be cremated and a celebration of his life will be at a later date.
