She was the daughter of Earl and Edith Hartshorn Sutherland Sr. She was reared at Burlingame and was graduated from Burlingame and was graduated from Burlingame High School in 1929. She later was graduated from a business college in Topeka.
She was a member of the former Burlingame United Methodist Church.
She married John L Herlan on March 5, 1933, at Miller.
