He was the husband of Julia Justyna Zavacka to whom he was married at his birthplace in the Rusyn village of Mikova which has been part of Austria and Hungary and is now in northeastern Slovakia. He emigrated to the United States shortly after their marriage in 1909 and his wife followed him in 1921 to Pittsburgh. They had three sons: Paul, John and Andy Warhol.
