DEATH SADDENS THIS LOCALITY

The entire community was greatly shocked Monday morning when a tolling church bell gave forth the sad announcement that Gerhard Monnich, a pioneer and highly respected resident of this place had passed away during the early morning hours at his home in this city. Heart failure was the cause of his death. The news of his death came with such suddenness that it was hard to believe the truth of the reports, for shortly before his death he and his family had just returned from an evening visit at the George Langemeier country north of town and had seemed to be in his usual good health. He was stricken about 12:30, medical aid being summoned at once, but death could not be stayed and the end came about 2 o'clock.

Mr. Monnich was one of the pioneers of this community coming here in 1869 when a lad of 15 years, and went through all the privations and hardships of the early day settlers. Since then he had continued to make this his home and by hard work, frugality, strict economy and good management gathered about him a goodly competence and at the time of his death was one of the largest land owners in the county. He was a just man; one whose integrity was never questioned; one who was honorable in his dealings with his fellow man and a man generous, kind hearted and universally respected and loved.

Deceased had attained the age of 69 years, 7 months and 15 days, having been born in Oldenburg, Germany, November 22, 1854. There he spent his boyhood and in 1869 came to America and this locality with his parents. His first home here was on a farm one mile north of the present site of Hooper, a year later moving to the old home place a few miles farther north. This latter place remained his home until the fall of 1903 when he removed to town and had since been an esteemed resident of our city. He was united in marriage on June 10, 1903, to Miss Gesine Freese at Elgin, Nebr. To this union were born three children, Miss Bertha, Henry and George, who with the widowed mother now have the sincere sympathy of the large circle of friends Mr. Monnich had made during his long residence among us. He is also survived by one sister Mrs. John H. Kuhlman, of Hooper.

The funeral was held yesterday afternoon and was very largely attended. Short services were first held at 1:30 at the home and at 2 o'clock at Zions Lutheran church, where the pastor, Rev. G. Duhrkop, spoke in English, and a former pastor, Rev. J. Shrader, of Yutan, spoke in German. Interment was made in the St. Paul Lutheran cemetery, 5 miles north of Hooper.
