Hugo Dechert was a German cellist and chamber musician. From 1881 Dechert was a member of the Berlin Royal Orchestra, i.e. the orchestra of the Berlin Court Opera, now the Staatsoper Unter den Linden. In 1886 he was appointed Royal Chamber Musician, from 1894 he was Principal Cello at the Royal Opera and in December 1898 he was appointed Royal Chamber Virtuoso.
In terms of chamber music, he was a co-founder and member of the Halir Quartet and the Hess Quartet, and from 1901 he gave concerts throughout Europe in a trio with Georg Schumann (piano) and Carl Halir and Willy Hess (violin).
Dechert also worked as a music teacher: from 1888 to 1891 at the Stern Conservatory.
