Blessed Bishop Manuel Basulto y Jiménez aka Bishop Manuel Basulto Jiménez born Adanero, La Moraña, Ávila, Castilla y León, Spain 17 May 1869 martyred 12 August 1936 in El Pozo del Tío Raimundo, Entrevías, Puente de Vallecas, Madrid, Spain by thugs of the Frente Popular/Popular Front during the Spanish Civil War 1936-1939.

He was the sixth of thirteen bishops murdered by Communism during that brutal war.

Son of a miller, he finished his ecclesiastical studies in Ávila, and was ordained a priest in 1892.
He graduated in Law from the University of Valladolid.
He was a master canon of León and a lecturer in Madrid.
In 1909 he was elected bishop of Lugo, and consecrated on 16 January 1910 by the Papal nuncio Antonio Cardenal Vico S.T.D. J.U.D. (1847-1929) in the Paulist church in Madrid.
He was appointed senador/senator in 1916.
In 1919 Benedict XV appointed him bishop of Jaén, diocese of which he took possession by proxy on 14 June 1920, celebrating his first mass on 29 June 1920.
On his shield is his motto: "Who has God, nothing is missing".

After the coup d'etat that began the Spanish Civil War, on 2 August 1936 Bishop Basulto was arrested by the leftists at his home in the episcopal palace along with his sister, Teresa, as well as her husband, Mariano Martín, as well as the dean of the cathedral, Félix Pérez Portela.
He was imprisoned in the cathedral of Jaén, where many other conservative Christian detainees were already in Jaén.

The civil governor of Jaén, worried about the overcrowding of the prisoners and about the possible removals by uncontrolled elements, spoke with the general director of Prisons, Pedro Villar Gómez (1878-1947), to be able to transfer them to the prison of Alcalá de Henares. After Obtaining approval, he organized several train trips that transferred the prisoners.

On 12 August 1936, Basulto was transferred to a train with another 245 inmates, including his sister and the dean of the cathedral. When the convoy arrived at the Santa Catalina-Vallecas station (Madrid), an Anarchist militia group stopped the convoy and unhooked the locomotive. Both the station chief and the Guardia Civil officer who commanded the convoy escort staff spoke by telephone with the Director General of Security, Manuel Muñoz Martínez (1888-1942). He was informed of the incident and that the anarchists had installed three machine guns at the height of the Pozo del Tío Raimundo, and that they had threatened to shoot at the civil guards if they did not leave.
Manuel Muñoz Martínez, powerless and without means to be able to tackling that situation, told the Guardia Civil to withdraw; later, he would explain that "the little authority that the government still retained would fall apart if the meager forces of public order ended up being overwhelmed in a confrontation with the armed people."

After the forces of order withdrew, the militiamen began to execute a large part of the prisoners carrying the train. 193 people were executed, in groups of 25, and their bodies were plundered.
Bishop Basulto, who knelt down and began to pray, was one of those executed.
His sister Teresa would also be killed during the massacre. When the civil governor of Jaén learned of the murders, desolate, he immediately submitted his resignation.

He is currently buried in the crypt of the church of the Tabernacle of the Cathedral of Jaén.
