Martha K. Ford
Washougal - Retired teacher Martha Kloninger Ford, 105, died at home Wednesday, Dec. 29, 1993. She was born Sept. 25, 1888, in Washougal and had lived there all her life.
Mrs. Ford graduated from eight grade in Washougal and enrolled at Portland High School, later to become Lincoln High School. She attended the University of Washington and graduated from Bellingham Normal, now Western Washington University. Mrs. Ford then studied in Germany for two years before teaching at several schools including, Salmon Creek, Cape Horn and Washougal. She retired in 1946 after 31 years.
Mrs. Ford enjoyed music, playing the violin and singing in the Bethel Congregational (Community) Church choir. She had travel extensively to Europe to visit relatives in Germany. She had also traveled to Hawaii and South Sea Islands, Australia, New Zealand, the Holy Land, British Isles, Italy, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, Sweden, Switzerland, Greece, Rumania and Spain.
Mrs. Ford was an honorary member of the Soroptimist International of Camas-Washougal and a life member of the Washougal Grange. She was a member of the Oraegon Cactus Society, Vancouver, Skamania and Camas-Washougal historical societies, Women's Garden Club of Camas-Washougal. Mrs. Ford, a member and past-president of the Clark County Retired Teachers Association, was given the U.S. Chamber of Commerce award as an outstanding senior citizen in 1969-70. She received a similar award from the state of Washington.
Survivors include two cousins, Horst Keller of Washougal and Gunther Utehs of Camas; a special friend, Dorothy Newby of Washougal; and numerous cousins in Germany.
A private graveside committal will be Monday at Sunnyside Cemetery in Washougal, followed by a memorial service at 1 p.m. at Bethel Community Church in Washougal. The casket will be open until 8 tonight and from noon to s5 p.m. Sunday at Straub's Funeral Home in Washougal.
