Mable Marie Tietgen was born January 2, 1925, on a farm southeast of Pender to John and Alma (Burmeister) Luschen. She attended grade school in Pender and Allen before moving with her parents to Wayne. She was a member of the first class to graduate from Wayne High School after the beginning of World War II. During the war, she worked at Union Pacific Headquarters as a secretary and later a riveter on B29’s at the Glen Martin Bomber Plant. Mable married Wayne Tietgen October 4, 1946. She worked as a secretary and was co-owner of Wayne’s Body Shop. Together they remodeled 13 houses and built one. Mable was active in school, church, and community activities. She was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church and then Our Savior Lutheran Church. Through the years she taught Sunday school, was Sunday School Superintendent, sang in the choir, served with the Altar Guild and LCW, and was on the visitation committee. She belonged to the hospital auxiliary, Wayne Country Club, and helped raise funds for building the new hospital.

Mable is survived her children, David Tietgen of Ahwatukee, AZ, Richard “Dick” (Nancy) Tietgen of Lenexa, KS, and Jeanne (Wilbert “Bud”) Phelps of Warrenton, VA; seven grandchildren, Heidi (Jeff) Goss, Jeremy (Kerri) Tietgen, Benjamin (Ashlee) Tietgen, Kacie (Rick Roberts) Tietgen, Toni Phelps, Samantha Phelps, Nicholas Phelps; eight great-grandchildren; brother, Herman “John” Luschen of Norfolk; nieces and nephews.

Mable was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Wayne in 2001; daughter-in-law, Davalynn Tietgen in 2020; and two sisters, Alma Gewee and Frieda Jorgensen.
