Judy F. VanDykhorst was born on July 31, 1944, in Estelline, SD, the daughter of Lewis and Annie (Poppen) Mennenga. She received her education in the Estelline schools, graduating from high school in 1962. She was united in marriage to Edward VanDykhorst on December 5, 1962, in Dempster, SD. She was employed for 17 years at the Estelline Nursing and Care Center until her retirement in 1999. In 1986, Judy was honored as Employee of the Year, based on her dedication to the job, positive attitude in being supportive of the healthcare system, as well as her ability to bring out the best in her co-workers, visitors and residents at the care center.
She was a member of Hamlin Reformed Church. She enjoyed following the Estelline Redmen activities over the years, watching basketball and football, reading, watching the Minnesota Twins and Vikings on TV, and especially spending time with her family and friends. A highlight was her 70th birthday party, that featured Nick’s Hamburger’s and a she was overjoyed in celebrating her birthday with everyone. Her family will consider her 70th birthday, as the celebration of her life. Judy loved sending greeting cards for all occasion, and continued to type them when she could no longer write. Judy had a love for horses and loved having all the excitement of the Estelline Rodeo activities.
Judy is survived by her daughter, Tammy (Robert) Gilligan, of Estelline, SD; granddaughter, Christina (Jason) Hai; 5 great-grandchildren, Shawn, Kobe, Hunter, Shelby and Leia; special nephew and caregiver, Larry Saathoff; two brothers, LaVerne (Linda) Mennenga, of Castlewood, SD and Dale (Tonya) Mennenga, of Westfield, WI; three sisters, Marilyn (Roger) Greenfield, of Castlewood, SD, Bonnie (William) Henrichsen, of Castlewood, SD and Louann Dahl (Dave Jensen), of Brookings, SD as well as several extended family members and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Lewis and Annie Mennenga; husband, Edward VanDykhorst; her son, Terry VanDykhorst; one sister-in-law, Everlyn Saathoff; her brothers-in-law, Richard Jongeling, Edward Saathoff and John VanDykhorst; two nephews, Scott Greenfield and David Jongeling and her niece, Mary Ann VanDykhorst.
