Catherine L. "Cathy" Wirtz, 51, Topeka, died Thursday, Sept. 29, 1999, at a Topeka hospital.
Mrs. Wirtz was the benefits coordinator for Topeka Unified School District 501 until she retired earlier this year due to failing health.
She was born July 25, 1948, in Topeka, the daughter of George & Regina Wittman Kippes.
She graduated from Silver Lake High School in 1966. Mrs. Wirtz was a member of St. Matthew Catholic Church and Beta Sigma Phi sorority. She was a co-founder of the 190th Air Refueling Wing Family Support Group, and a member of the executive council of the Kansas National Guard Family Support Group.
She married Paul L. Wirtz Jr. on Oct. 10, 1970, in Topeka. He survives.
Other survivors include two sons, Christopher G. Wirtz, Topeka, and Michael P. Wirtz, at home; two daughters, Robin M. Wirtz, Topeka, and Suzanne N. Wirtz, at home; and two sisters, Geneva Paternoster, Topeka, and Darlene Williams, Wamego.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Matthew Catholic Church. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery. Mrs. Wirtz will lie in state after 4 p.m. Friday at the church, where a parish prayer service will be at 7 p.m.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Catherine Wirtz Memorial Fund to be designated later, and sent in care of Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home.
