Dr. Dolores Yvonne Hahn Bachtel, 56,
of Rockville, died Friday, Feb. 16,
at Georgetown University Hospital,
Washington,D.C., after an extended illness.
Born March 11,1933, in Woodsboro,
she was a daughter of the late
Charles Hamilton and Elizabeth May
Boller Hahn.
Dr. Bachtel grew up in Frederick
County and graduated from Frederick
High School in 1951. Receiving
her bachelor's degree from
Wittenberg Univeristy in education
in home economics and comprehensive
social studies, she began her
teaching career at Edgewood Junior-
Senior High School in Harford
County.
She entered the field of special
education in 1964 and pursued further
study at Loyola College, George
Mason University, University of
Virginia, University of Maryland,
Nova University and University of
Wisconsin.
Dr. Bachtel was renowned in the
state for her work with persons who
are mildly and moderately mentally
handicapped, have specific learning
disabilities, emotionally handicapped
and the orthopedic handicapped.
She moved to Montgomery
County in 1966 where she served as
principal of Longview School (the
Montgomery County public school
center for the mentally and multiple
handicapped) for the past 20 years.
Surviving are one son. David Allan
Bachtel of Pembrook Pines, Fla.;
one sister and brother-in-law, Nancy
0. and Donald C. Smith of Punta
Gorda, Fla.; one niece, Oneida Y.
Crum; one nephew, J. Wesley
Baugher Jr.; one great-niece,
