Canonicus was chief of the Narragansett Indian tribe during the time of the arrival of the Pilgrims at Plymouth. He became a friend to Roger Williams after Roger Williams had been driven out of Massachusetts Bay Colony. He contracted a peace treaty with William Bradford, the Plymouth governor, which stood until after his death in 1647. In 1636, Canonicus gave Roger Williams the land that became the Providence Plantations . Canonicus was a phenomenal leader and a keeper of peace. In 1637, he helped encourage the Narragansett tribe to take the side of the colonists in the midst of the Pequot War. In 1997 he was inducted into the Rhode Island Heritage Hall of Fame, and September 12, 1883 he was commemorated at North Burial Ground with a monument, which was attended by almost 1,000 people.
