Jack DeShurley, 92, returned to his heavenly home on August 25, 2020 after a valiant battle with Alzheimer's. His devotion to his family and his firm belief in God supported him in his struggle and ultimately gave him peace.
Jack was born on May 29, 1928 to Louie and Grace (Hamilton) DeShurley. He was born and raised in Newburg, MO. He graduated from Newburg High School, class of 1946. Immediately after graduation Jack joined the Army Air Corps and was honorably discharged in 1949 in CA. He attended Bethany Baptist Church in Los Angeles, CA where many of his family attended. There, he met his future wife, Peggy Rister. They began dating in February of 1950. In August, Jack decided to come back home to MO where he attended the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy. The long distance romance was too much for the couple, so on Jack's Christmas break that year, he went to CA where he and Peggy were married.
He graduated in January 1954 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering and the couple, with their young son moved back to CA. During their life in CA, they were faithful members of First Baptist Church in Norwalk, CA where Jack taught a Sunday school class, served on many committees, was the church organist and was ordained a deacon.
In 1975, Jack had a desire to move back to MO. He came back and bought Jack's Drugstore in Newburg, keeping it for 6 years. During the first few months at the drugstore, he and Peggy were asked to serve on the bicentennial committee. He and Peggy, along with their committee, came up with the idea of an old fashioned homemade ice cream get together in the courtyard of the Houston House. That continued for 3 years and due to the success and tremendous crowds, it was then turned in to Newburg Day, which has continued annually ever since. In recognition of the 40th Anniversary of Newburg Day, Jack and Peggy were honored as Mr. and Mrs. Newburg. Jack also worked at Rawlings as a Quality Control Engineer.
Later, he worked for the Army in St. Louis as a Quality Control Engineer before transferring to Ft. Leonard Wood as an Energy Manager, where he retired in 1995. In 2012, he was selected to be a part of the Honor Flight to Washington D.C. where he was recognized for his time served in WWII. Jack served as the worship leader and choir director at First Baptist Church in Newburg, MO for 30 years before retiring due to ill health. He served as deacon for 55 years, including his time in Newburg and in CA. He became a Deacon Emeritus in 2016. Jack started piano lessons when he was 5 years old and music was his joy. Even more than music, he dearly loved his family and enjoyed any time he spent with them.
Jack is survived by his wife of 69 years, Peggy of the home. Four children: Ray (Janise) DeShurley, of Doolittle, MO; Diana Darnell of Jefferson City, MO; Denise (Mike) Sharp of Doolittle, MO; and Tina (Tom) Monson of Doolittle, MO. Seven grandchildren: Christie (Max) Nisperos of Citrus Heights, CA; Melissa DeBlasi-Dillon (Derrick) of Rolla, MO; Erica (Daniel) Trent of Citrus Heights, CA; Brandon Cole of Doolittle, MO; Teresa DeShurley of St. James, MO; Amber Sharp of Rolla, MO; Michelle Bock of Rolla, MO; 17 great grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren.
Jack is preceded in death by his mother and father, Louie and Grace DeShurley; brother, Chester Lee "Dobber" DeShurley; and granddaughter, Julie Darnell.
Services for Jack DeShurley will be held at the Newburg Baptist Church, on Friday, August 28. The visitation will be from 10 am to 12 pm, with the funeral at 12 pm. Interment will follow at the Rolla City Cemetery.
