Philanthropist, financier. A native of California, he was a member of the prominent Folger family, of coffee fame. His great-grandfather was the company's founder J.A. Folger, and his daughter was Manson family murder victim Abigail Anne Folger. As the company's Chairman of the Board, and President, he built Folgers Coffee Company into the third largest coffee wholesaler in the United States. He eventually sold the company to Procter & Gamble in 1963, for 1,650,000 shares of Procter & Gamble common stock, but continued to operate Folgers as a Procter & Gamble subsidiary. A graduate of Yale University, he studied business and excelled in sports including football, polo, and track and field as a young man. Married twice, he also served as a Marine Major during World War II. He passed away in 1980, and was buried in the Folger Family Plot.
