Sister Mary Eloi, Appolonia Rinke, was born in Centerline, Michigan, February 15, 1888. Her parents were Mary Warner and Joseph Rinke. She was the youngest of fourteen children, and her family was a devout Christian family. Two of her older sisters, Sister Mary Emmanuel and Sister Mary Rita, had preceded her into the Community. They had attended the little school conducted by the Sisters of Providence at Centerline, but owing to the desire of the Bishop that all the Sisters in his diocese be diocesan, the Sisters of Providence withdrew before either of the elder Sisters entered the Community. They met a great deal of opposition from the parish priest and had difficulty in securing the required recommendation because the pastor felt they should join a diocesan order. In fact, Sister Mary Rita went to live in Detroit and secured her recommendation from there. This opposition did not exist in Sister Mary Eloi's case because the pastor at that time, Father Boorman, had always been a good friend to the Sister of Providence and thought it quite natural that Sister Mary Eloi would want to join the same community as her sisters.

Sister Mary Eloi did not enjoy good health, but in spite of this disability, she was a good teacher of elementary grades. She had entered she community on February 11, 1905, and made temporary vows in 1907 and 1910, and final vows in 1910.
