Ferber, George J.
1845 - 1923

George John Ferber was born on September 9, 1845 in Himbach, Hesse-Darmstadt, Germany, a small town northeast of Frankfurt. He came to the US on the ship "Gessner" on July 25, 1867, stating that he was a farmer heading for Pittsburgh.

He married Elisabeth Roesch that same year and the couple had 9 children.

He bought one farm in Shaler Township, then moved to one in O'Hara Township after mine subsidence ruined much of the tillable land. About the year 1900 he fell from a hay wagon and sustained serious injuries. He was crippled the rest of his life.

The family moved to a smaller farm, then to a house in the village of Pleasant Valley, just outside Sharpsburg.

When Elisabeth died, George moved in with his son Albert, who was the caretaker of Greenwood Cemetery. He slept on a cot in what later became the dining room for the family. It had a fireplace and was next to the kitchen. His death was the result of chronic valvular heart disease and mitral insufficiency. His last illness was of 5 months duration. The RE Campbell Funeral Home in Sharpsburg arranged the funeral.
He was buried in the Etna graveyard, as was his wife who died the year before. His son, Albert, moved the whole family to Greenwood Cemetery sometime before 1947. For years a marker for him remained in the Etna graveyard, but was finally removed.
