Helen was an only child of her parents, Albert Ferber and Louise Herbig. She was born in her grandparents home on Kittanning Pike in O'Hara Township. She lived in several homes near and on the Pike during her earliest years. She moved with her parents to the house in Greenwood Cemetery on her 6th birthday in 1921 when her father accepted the position of caretaker. She lived there until her marriage to Harvey Wikert Jr in 1941.

A couple years after World War II ended, she and her husband moved back into the cemetery house because her father had developed serious health issues. She raised her 2 children in that home until her mother died in 1959. She was a member of the Board of Managers of the cemetery and its long-time secretary.

She taught school for O'Hara Township in the late 1930s, then taught in elementary schools in Bladensburg and Beltsville in Prince George County, Maryland during World War II. For many years she was a substitute teacher for Fox Chapel schools. When Harvey died in 1975, she moved briefly to Baytown, Texas and taught preschool there.

Helen returned to Pennsylvania after her daughter's marriage. Her last years were spent on a farm near Freeport in Armstrong County, with her daughter's family.

She died in Natrona Heights in 2004 due to complications of pneumonia.
