Luverne Elizabeth (Meeker) Johns, age 99, a long-time Pekin resident, passed away at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, January 23, 2021 at The Pines of Sarasota in Sarasota, Florida. She formerly resided in Hudson, Illinois, Jacksonville, Illinois and Lauderdale by the Sea, Florida.

Born October 31, 1921 in Green Valley, Illinois to Fred J. and Grace Emma (Hilst) Meeker, she married A.B. “Pete” Johns on January 3, 1943 in Pekin, Illinois. He died on May 17, 2000 in Pekin. Luverne also was preceded in death by her parents and all seven of her brothers who called her Sis, Clarence, Earl, Harley, Orville, Robert, Roy and Floyd.

Surviving are three children, Lonnie J. (Bev) Johns of Jacksonville,Illinois and Lauderdale by the Sea, Florida, Judi Hauter of Ocala, Florida and Jan (Don) Wilson of Sarasota, Florida; her beloved three grandchildren, Dara (Kip) McCoy, Brett Deppert, Kendra (Paul) Stallings Augustyn; five great grandchildren, Larisa (Austin) Savage, Elysha McCoy, Kiara McCoy, Kelton Augustyn and Emsley Augustyn; one great-great-granddaughter, Willa Jane Savage; one sister, Lois Brennemann of Pekin. She also is survived by many nieces and nephews, cousins, and friends.

Luverne, Lu, Lulu, and Mother Lu was never a stranger to anyone. She always greeted everyone with a smile and a kind word. Until the age of 94 she remained active, participating in exercise, and doing a job when she saw it needed to be done. If you missed her, she might be out on a ladder cleaning gutters or washing windows. She grew up on a farm outside Green Valley, Illinois, and maintained that strength and fortitude throughout her life. Pete and Lu loved to travel across the United States and particularly to Las Vegas. She belonged to a ladies Pinochle club and loved to play Black Jack and Bingo.

Lu maintained her friendships that she made early on for many years. She was known for her cooking and baking skills (especially her pies) and for all the beautiful crocheted gifts she made for many. Lu had a real flair for style and all of her clothes had to match, her hair had to be done, and her nails were polished. She was an award winning bowler and was the author of her book, They Call Me Sis. Being a mom, grandma and great grandma was her greatest joy and she always put her family first.

Lu Johns spent much of her working career as a bookkeeper for Cohen’s Furniture. In her younger years, she was also employed by Vogel’s Supermarket, Libby Pumpkin, and Bonnie’s Dress Shop. Lu led her family by example with her hard work ethic.

She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Pekin.
