He emigrated to the USA on the "Leipzig" departing Bremen and arriving at Baltimore 8 May 1875. He resided in Cincinnati at least from 1883 on when his sister Katherine and husband stayed with him. He worked at various jobs but particularly from 1907 on worked as a proprietor of a livery stable and a teamster. He may have been married a short while for he is sometimes called a widower. From 1907 on too he seems to have taken on the name Hermann as his preferred name. He died at St. Mary's Hospital at Betts and Linn Ave.
