Malaysian Monarch. He was the 4th Yang di-Pertuan Agong of Malaysia from 1965 to 1970, and the 16th Sultan of Terengganu from 1945 to 1979. He was the fifth son of Sultan Zainal Abidin III. He was educated at the Kuala Terengganu Malay School, and then went on to the Malay College. In 1929, he entered the Terengganu administrative service. In 1940, he was appointed a minister of the Terengganu state cabinet. In 1945, he was installed as the Sultan of Terengganu after the dismissal of Sultan Ali Shah. He was elected the fourth Yang di-Pertuan Agong of Malaysia in 1965, succeeding Tuanku Syed Harun Putra . His term in office was marked by the May 13 incident, which sparked racial riots in Kuala Lumpur. He died in 1979 after suffering from two heart attacks.
