Anthony's birth name was Thomas Bower, but he was renamed Anthony as a young boy, in honor of his Uncle Anthony Bower (1840-1865), who died during the Civil War after being imprisoned by the Confederates. At about fifteen Anthony (Thomas) stopped school and helped on the home farm until he was twenty-one, when his father gave him, as he had all of his sons, a good team of horses, and his blessing, and Anthony went to Western Iowa to live on land near that of his brother John, his sister Mary, with his sister Alice and his brother Albert not far away,. His land was on a rolling prairie in Ida County, near the Woodbury line, four miles from Correctionville. It was called the "Hillsdale Stock Farm". In 1917 Anthony and Elizabeth moved to Hollywood, California where their daughter Ruby Jessica lived with her husband Arthur Fay Gillette and their children.
