He studied Agricultural Engineering at the University of Massachusetts and during World War II, he served with the United States Army with who he was stationed in England. Following his return home, he focused fully on acting and appeared in the original Broadway run of "South Pacific" (1949 to 1954). During the early 1950s, he began a lengthy association with TV and films. Among his many television credits are "Alfred Hitchcock Presents," "Hawaii Five-0" and the soap operas "Search for Tomorrow" and "Santa Barbara." His film credits include "Station Six Sahara" (1963), "The Thomas Crown Affair" (1967), "Serpico" (1973) and "Midway (1976). He received Tony Award nominations for his performances in the plays "The Young Man from Atlanta" (1997) and "Morning's at Seven" (2002). He was married to actress Jeannie Carson from 1960 until his death.
