Weldon A. Spies (RPh) of Houston, Texas passed away at Houston Methodist Hospital on Thursday, May 6, 2021 at the age of 91. Weldon was born December 6, 1929 in Houston, Texas at St. Joseph Hospital. He grew up in the Houston Heights. He attended and was confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Houston of which he was a member all of his life. He graduated from John H. Reagan High School in 1948 and went on to attend the University of Houston, College of Pharmacy. On September 3, 1950, he married Lydia Schreiber of Shiner, Texas. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacy in 1952. After passing the Texas State Board of Pharmacy exam, he received his license on June 4, 1952 and went to work for Walgreen's for the next 35 years. After retiring from the Walgreen's, he and Lydia began traveling throughout the US and Europe. They also enjoyed spending time working at their farm in Shiner. He enjoyed watching sports, especially the University of Houston football games. He was a lifetime member of the U of H Alumni Association. He enjoyed a good German beer, a glass of wine, great Texas BBQ, and dancing with Lydia. He is survived by his son, Don Spies, of Houston, Texas and many family and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents, Alvin and Hilda (Loewe) Spies; his loving and devoted wife, Lydia (Schreiber) Spies; and his sister, Verda (Spies) Blome. Visitation will be May 13th from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm at the Heights Funeral Home, 1317 Heights Blvd. in Houston. Graveside service will be May 15th at 11:30 am at the Shiner City Cemetery, 153 CR 348 in Shiner, TX. A memorial service will be held on May 22nd at 4:00 pm at Zion Lutheran Church, 3606 Beauchamp St. in Houston. The family would like to thank Gisela Stauder-Mordecai, Kara Ward, Melanie Love, and the staff of The Village of the Heights for their kindness and constant attention to him. The family would also like to thank the doctors, nurses, and staff of the Medical Clinic of Houston and the Houston Methodist Hospital for their excellent care for Weldon over the years and in his final days.
