Mendek was born in Krakow, Poland to Efraim Handwerk and Chaja Zimmer - he had several siblings but only 3 sisters survived the Holocaust. The family was in the Krakow ghetto. Mendek was transferred to several concentration camps, including Plaszow. After liberation, he met my aunt Bashe Balbirer and got married in Bad Ishel, Austria in August 1947. In September 1948, they, together with my dad Mendel Balbirer, arrived in Montevideo Uruguay, where they lived until January 1975, after which, they made alyia to Israel. They had tow children; David and Julia and a big family in Israel.
