Mrs. Josephine Ertel passed away at her home on 443 North East street at 1:20 Wednesday afternoon. Shad been a sufferer of arthritis for twenty years and had taken treatments in sanatoriums far and near for relief. The last place visited was Rome City, three years ago, and since that time she was confined to her bed. She was patient in her suffering and was lovingly nursed by her family and especially by her devoted husband who very seldom left her bedside.
Mrs. Ertel was born near that quaint and historic little town of Oldenburg, Franklin county, Indiana, on August 23, 1854. She was one of eight children born to William and Josephine (Ferkenhoff) Tebbe who have all preceded her to the grave with the exception of one brother, John T. Tebbe, living northeast of Tipton.
Mr. and Mrs. Ertel moved to Tipton county in 1883 and have resided here ever since with the exception of thirteen winters spent in West Palm Beach, Florida. Mrs Ertel was one of the many pioneers that saw Tipton county grow from a country of swamp and wilderness and corduroy roads to one of the most beautiful spots in Indiana. She had a progressive mind and was a real helpmate, supervising her home and making plans until her very last moments.
Jospehine Tebbe was united in marriage to John M. Ertel in Oldenburg, October 29, 1879. Six children were born to this union, Millie, wife of W.H. Brady, Dorothea, dying in infancy, Josephine, wife of Felix H. Whidden, and Mrs. Ida Laughlin, both of West Palm Beach, Florida, Edward Ertel, associated with is father in the bottling business, and Arthur, dying in infancy. She is also survived by seven grandchildren, Alice and Helen Brady, Elizabeth, Mark, Rita, Joan and James Ertel.
