Mr. Sariola had been a resident of Lawrence since 1965. He retired from the Kansas University department of sociology in May 1989.
He was born April 3, 1919, in Kalajoki, Finland.
He served in the Finnish Army during World War II, receiving many decorations. After the war, he was Chief of Information for the Finnish War Relief Agency and was a reporter for Helsingin Sanomat, Finland's leading newspaper.
He became director of the Social Research Section of the Finnish government's agency ALKO and was later recruited by the United Nations to work as a consultant to the governments of several Latin American nations in the development of social research projects. He served in Costa Rica, Bolivia, Venezuela, Chile and Guatemala.
He entered the academic field in the United States in 1960 and came to KU in 1965. Mr. Sariola is the author of six books and recently finished another book manuscript.
He married Ana Teresa Blanco on April 2, 1949. She survives of the home.
Other survivors include two daughters, Karin Gill, Honolulu, and Taina M. Grenholm, Virginia Beach, Va.; and two grandsons.
