Octogenarian Died Sunday

Funeral services for Mrs. Clara Vanderzanden, Forest Grove, were conducted today (Thursday) at the Fiuten-Friesen Mortuary Chapel, Forest Grove.

Mrs. Vanderzanden died Sunday at a local hospital following an illness of the past year.

The Rev. Elby Boosinger, Pastor of the First Christian Church of Forest Grove, officiated with Dave Fuiten as soloist and Mrs. Gordon Merrill, organist.

Entombment was at the Forest View Cemetery Mausoleum with Don Swagger, Carl Crockett, Allen Harris, Bruce Raymond and Eugene Vanderzanden serving as pallbearers.

Mrs. Vanderzanden was born at Davenport, Iowa, Dec. 8, 1876, the daughter of the late Raymond and Wilhimena Strohmayer. The Strohmayer family came to this community in the early 1880's and took up a homestead in the Hayward district, west of banks. Mrs. Vanderzanden was married to J. P. Vanderzanden at Verboort on Oct. 31, 1898. They farmed in the Forest Grove and Banks area until moving to the family home at 1919 Birch street in Forest Grove in 1944.

Mr. and Mrs. Vanderzanden celebrated 62 years of marriage before his death in April 1961.

Surviving are five sons, William R., Arthur J., Ed, T. Frank and Robert Vanderzanden, all living in the Forest Grove area; 13 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. Her youngest son Ralph died in December 1962.

Also surviving are two brothers, Louie Strohmayer of Portland and otto Strohmayer of Cornelius, and two sisters, Mrs. Katherine Vanderzanden of Banks and Mrs. Merry Esh of Portland.
