Son of yacht designer John Harvey and his wife Margaret Diana Mary, daughter of Rev. David George Goyder.

Brother of actor-manager Sir John Martin-Harvey and Swedenborgian minister Rev. Charles Woodroffe Harvey.

After training as a cadet in the Royal Navy, David emigrated to California where, in 1890 he married 15-year-old, Cynthia Adelaide Cash. Both Cynthia and their baby daughter died the following year.

He married a second time, had another daughter who also died. In 1906 he lost everything in the San Francisco Earthquake.

He died at Agnew State Hospital of third stage syphilis.
