France lost a war with Germany which gave Germany the French provinces of Alsace and Lorraine. Theodore Wendling's family lived in that area, which had previously been the town of Uhlwiller, France. The parents [unnamed] of Theodore and John Wendling said that they would rather see their sons go to the new country of America than live under the rule of Germany. Theodore and John were each given $500.00 in gold by their parents and they left for America. In 1870, the Wendling brothers arrived in Newark, New Jersey and boarded a train and traveled as far as the railroad went, which was Halstead, Kansas.

Theodore Wendling attended Catholic services that were occasionally held at the James Ryun residence and there met Maggie McCooey. Theodore and Maggie were married September 10, 1881 in St. Mary's Cathedral in Newton, Harvey County, Kansas.
