Maggie McCooey was the oldest of 3 sisters of Newry, Ireland. Though the sisters were young, they had lost their parents and had been left a small inheritance. Being the oldest, Maggie decided that they should travel to America and made arrangements to live with their uncle, James Ryun of Halstead, Kansas. Census information states that they came to America in 1880. [Note that James Ryan 1840-1908, born in Ireland, is also buried here in Halstead Cemetery.]

Maggie McCooey met Theodore Wendling and they were married September 10, 1881 at St. Mary's Cathedral in Newton, Kansas.
