CHRISTENA RADES: 1822 - 1908
Christena sometimes earlier called Ernstine was actually named Hanna Justine Brunk by her parents, Johann Brunk and Louise Koeppen, on January 14, 1822 in the small Pomeranian village of Konstantinopel in the district of Saatzig. She was baptized about two weeks later on Tuesday, January 29th in the evangelical church at Kremmin.
About the year 1848, at the age of 26, she married Friedrich "Wilhelm" Rades, who was two years her junior. Together they settled down in the village of her birth, Konstantinopel, and raised a family of nine children of which seven were boys and two were girls. One son, Karl Ferdinand, died in childhood at the age of five.
In 1879 their daughter, Friederike "Wilhelmine" eloped to America with Albert Marten. And in 1880, one of their son's, Wilhelm Jr. left to immigrate to America also, followed by his younger brother, Ferdinand with his sister, Ernstine, in 1881. Then in 1884, she and her husband finally decided to come to America themselves in order to be with the rest of their family once more. Traveling to Bremen, Germany with their 16 year old son, Julius, the small family steamed out of port on the "S.S. Oder". After navigating the Atlantic ocean for about two weeks, they finally docked in New York harbor on June 19th, 1884. and then traveled by rail to Chicago to finally reunite with the rest of their family.
Not long after their arrival in America, she and Wilhelm Anglicized their names to "William" and "Christena" respectively. They also made plans, along with their daughter's family, the Martens, to relocated to the farmlands of Fairchild, Eau Claire County, Wisconsin, where they all settled down and began farming for many years.
In 1908, after sixty years of marriage, Christena died. She attained the age of 86. and was laid to rest in Gruhlke Cemetery. Four years later, her husband, William was interred next to her in the family plot. William was 88 years old.
