Physician, Educator. He served as the 11th Provost of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. A graduate of the institution in 1862 and of the Medical School in 1864, he would serve as a resident at the Pennsylvania Hospital before returning to the University of Pennsylvania as a medical professor. He would go on to teach Clinical Medicine, Morbid Anatomy and Physical Diagnosis before being appointed to the Chair of Clinical Medicine. Elected Provost of the school in 1881, he would go on to greatly expand the scope and enrollment of the University, applying newly popular ideas of coupling classroom learning with hands-on practical clinical training. During his tenure he would found the Wharton School of Business and the Graduate School of Arts and Science. When he left the post in 1895 he had expanded the schools from five to nine, and doubled the student body enrollment.
He was a member of the prominent and wealthy Pepper family of Philadelphia. With an endowment from his uncle, George S. Pepper, Dr. William Pepper helped found the Free Public Library of Philadelphia in 1892. Today a statue of Dr. Pepper is featured prominently in the library.
