Barbara Christie Sommer was born on 28 Dec 1910, in Cedar Rapids. Her parents were George Conrad Sommer (1866-1950) and Wilhelmine Marie Metz (1868-1946). She died of pneumonia, and influenza on 27 Oct 1918. She had 10 older siblings; Henrietta Marie Sommer (1888-1906), Marie Katharine Sommer Hudson(1890-1910), Henry George Sommer (1891-1932), Katherine Wilhelmine Sommer Schloss (1893-1952), George Carl Sommer(s) (1895-1971), Wilhelmine Jacobine Sommer Krabacher Lewis (1897-1964), Carl Jacob Sommer (1901-1928), Marguerite Sommer Bishop (1904-1959), William Frederick Sommer(s) (1906-1989), and Elizabeth Georgette Sommer Clark Wolcott (1909-1986). She also was raised with her niece, Wilma Henrietta Hudson Edmonds (1909-1990), after the death of Wilma's mother, in 1910.
