Anthropologist. Florence "Suzie" Scundoo Dennis Shotridge was a Tlingit Indian who worked as an anthropologist among her own people, often collaborating with her husband and fellow anthropologist Louis Shotridge. Her Tlingit name was Kaatxwaaxsnéi, referring to a special ceremony of the Tlingit. Florence worked for years at the Penn Museum in a voluntary capacity. In 1916 the Shotridges undertook the first anthropological expedition led by Native Americans. The expedition entrusted Louis and Florence with the task of collecting ethnographic objects and gathering detailed information on myths and religious beliefs. In 1917 while on the expedition Florence died of tuberculosis in her hometown of Haines, Alaska.
