We regret to announce the death of Miss Mary Augusta Gordon, sister of the late General Gordon, which occurred at her residence in Southampton. The deceased lady was the daughter of the late Lieutenant-General H. W. Gordon, RA., and was an active worker in the establishment of boys' brigades commemorative of the work of the "Hero of Khartoum." The news of her death was sent to the Queen at Osborne, and her Majesty at once despatched a telegram expressing her deep sympathy with the bereaved family. [Daily Telegraph & Courier (London) - Friday 11 August 1893, p.5]

FUNERAL OF MISS GORDON. — On Monday the funeral of the late Miss Mary Augusta Gordon, sister of the hero of Khartoum, took place at Southampton Cemetery. Although the lady had desired that the ceremony should be strictly private, a large number distinguished persons were present, desirous to pay their last tribute of respect. The body was met at the gate by a contingent of the Gordon Boys' Brigade. Sir John and Lady Cowell specially attended from Osborne to represent the Queen and other members of the Royal Family, whilst Sir Charles Wilson, director of the Ordnance Survey, represented the Duke and Duchess of Connaught. A large number of philanthropic institutions were also represented. It will be remembered that when the fate of General Gordon was known, the deceased lady was presented with a national address of sympathy from the women of England, headed by the Queen. [Weston-super-Mare Gazette, and General Advertiser - Wednesday 16 August 1893, p.4]
