Joseph A. Bernard, age 82, died Monday, February 25, 2008 at St. Landry Extended Care in Opelousas. Mr. Bernard was a native of Arnaudville but has been a resident of Lafayette since 1957. He was an independent truck driver for over 38 years and drove for many companies in the oil field industry. He was in the United States Marines and served during World War II in the Pacific theatre from January 8, 1945 to June 2, 1946.

Survivors include four sons, Larry Bernard Sr. and his wife, Judy, of Opelousas, Lester Bernard and his wife, Beverly, of Church Point, Roger Dale Bernard and his wife, Irene, of Rayne, and Kenneth Bernard and his wife, Kathy, of Youngsville; two brothers, Lawrence Bernard of Lawtell, and Leroy Bernard and his wife, Rena Mae, of Scott; four sisters, Rita Venable and her husband, Norris, Blanche Lyons and her husband, Carol, both of Church Point, Elaine Marks and her husband, Yorick, of Opelousas, and Eva Mae Grimes, of Trinity, TX; ten grandchildren; and twenty three great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Heribert Bernard and the former Adele Stelly; his wife of over 60 years, Mervis Stelly; two brothers, Murphy Bernard and Yves Bernard; and one sister.
