Born at home on Sept. 6, 1923, in Tipton, she was the daughter of the late Edward and Josephine Cook Ertel. She graduated from St. Joseph Academy, Tipton, in 1941. She moved to Lafayette in 1941 and graduated from the St. Elizabeth School of Nursing in 1944.
On June 22, 1946, she married John Charles Stodgell from Kokomo at St. John's Church in Tipton. He died Dec. 18, 1967.
Mrs. Stodgell was a staff nurse at St. Elizabeth Medical Center from 1944 to 1945. From 1945 to 1946, she worked at St. Mary's Hospital in West Palm Beach, Fla. She also worked at the Purdue University Naval Sick Bay during World War II. From 1976 to 1995 she worked at the Indiana Veterans' Home, West Lafayette. She also was a homemaker.
She was an avid bridge player having achieved Life Masters Points. She was a member of the Lafayette Duplicate Bridge Club and the American Contract Bridge League. She taught bridge at the YWCA in the 1960s and 1970s.
Mrs. Stodgell was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church where she was a past Eucharistic Minister and active member of the Bereavement Committee and Altar Society.
She liked to travel and cruise with her family.
She is survived by four daughters, Patricia Johnson and Kathy Holdgreve (husband: Bob), both of Fort Wayne, and Terry Janssen and Cindy Veach (husband: Jerry), both of Lafayette; one son, Mark Stodgell (wife: Donna Warner) of Lafayette; one sister, Betty Moore of Tipton; and two brothers, Mark Ertel of Indianapolis and Jim Ertel of Lafayette.
Also surviving are 9 grandchildren, Lori Ann Janssen, Marta Davis, James Johnson, Montana Warner, Jennifer Riley, John Johnson, Emilee Veach, Rory Stodgell and Nicole Wilson; and 4 great-grandchildren. Twin daughters Marlyn and Carolyn, who died in infancy, and a sister, Rita Cage of Tipton, preceded in death.
