Death of J. J. Hoekstra-Brief Sketch of His Life.
Jurnen J. Hoekstra was born in Vriesland, Netherlands in 1830. In 1854 he came to this country with his mother and two sisters and settled at Kalamazoo. He at once found employment with James Turner at the City bakery. In 1861 he removed to Vriesland, Ottawa county, and became a farmer, afterwards conducting small store as well. In August 1862, he married a daughter of a prosperous farmer, Mr. Peter Karsen. Eight children were the fruit of this union, six of whom survive. In 1869 Mr. Hoekstra retuned to Kalamazoo and has been here ever since. He purchased the grocery store on Portage street, then owned by H. H. Boekeloo, and this became his home. He was a devoted Christian, holding the position of deacon in the Holland Christian church from 1880 until his death. He was also a Sunday-school teacher, and an esteemed friend. He was a well-known and respected citizen and leaves a large circle of friends to mourn his loss. He has suffered illness for more than a year, and died at his residence, 715 Portage street, Saturday last of dropsy. His age was 55 years, three months and five days. Funeral will be held Tuesday, the 23d, at 2 P. M. at the Holland Christian church, corner of Walnut and John streets. All friends are cordially invited.
