Shizue's mother, Matsu Ishiwatari, was born on June 7, 1893, year 26 of the Meiji era, and was the first daughter to Minosuke and Kiku Ishiwatari, and was entered in their family registry of Ishiwatari, Mamoru in Yokosuka city.
Recent DNA testing reveals that their shared mtDNA (Maternal) Haplogroup Subtype is "D4e2", whose "Eve" progenitor was born between 3,000 and 8,800 years ago, probably in East Asia. The parent MtDNA Haplogroup, "D", is believed to have arisen in Asia some 48,000 years ago, descending from parent mtDNA Haplogroup "M", which most likely originated in Eurasia about 60,000 years ago. The mtDNA Subclade "D4" is the most frequently occurring mtDNA haplogroup among modern populations of northern East Asia, such as Japan and it is also found in the mtDNA of indigenous peoples of the Americas.
Shizue Ishiwata first married Seikichi Kushihara in Japan and together they had a daughter, Hideyo, and a son, Hidehiko.
Shizue next married Arthur "Buddy" Speegle in Japan and together they had 2 sons, who were both born in Sasebo city, Nagasaki Prefecture, Japan. Their first-born son, Joseph Speegle (Nov. 7, 1956 - Nov. 7, 1956), did not survive his birth. Their second son was born about a year later.
After a few years, Shizue and Buddy moved from Japan to Hawaii and finally they moved to Waco, Texas, when Buddy finally retired from the United States Navy.
