Son of Rev. Johann Georg Josef Anton Rieger and Wilhelmine Louise (Schemel) Rieger. He died before the establishment of Aspen Grove Cemetery and was probably buried in Smith Cemetery and later removed to Aspen Grove with his mother. A small item in the 20 May 1924 Hawk Eye indicated both Mrs. Joseph Rieger and her infant were buried in Aspen Grove. It is believed that the crinoid encrusted monument on Lot 2 of Block 40 is for the Riegers as a stories in the 20 May 1924 and 6 Nov 1934 Hawk Eye identified a fossil laden monument as bearing the Reiger name. An entry in Joseph Rieger's diary from 5 Dec 1843 says "...I drew an outline of a Tombstone for Minette, 9 ft. high, an obelisk on a square pedistal. I will have the inscription poured in iron." While the monument is somewhat short of 9 feet in height and shows no evidence of having an iron plate with an inscription attached, it is otherwise a fair description of this monument.
