Boxer. He began his boxing career at the tender age of 12. He left school after the seventh grade and turned pro at 15, eventually becoming the first Bahamian to win a world boxing championship. The third of 10 children, he supported his family with his boxing earnings. He reportedly broke "Hammering Hank" Armstrong's record of 46 straight wins to start his career, although some sources suggest an early loss. He claimed the WBC junior middleweight title in 1975 by defeating Brazil's Miguel DeOliveire. In a title fight against Eckhard Dagge in Berlin in 1976, Obed retired in the 10th round despite leading on the scorecards, citing blindness in one eye. This fight was the turning point of his career, and he never regained his former glory.

Known for his quiet nature, Obed became almost a recluse after his boxing career. Criticism and accusations awaited him upon his return to his hometown. He also struggled with the disappearance of his childhood trainer. He passed away in June 2018. He was declared a national hero, received the British Empire Medal, and was inducted into the Florida Hall of Fame and the National Hall of Fame.
